Auckland’s most famous takeaway | From Cambodian refugee to South Auckland Robin Hood | New Zealand

For a while now we’ve wanted to delve a bit deeper into the stories behind some of the epic food we share on Chasing a Plate. It’s a lot easier to do now we’re back home filming in Aotearoa/New Zealand because we can actually communicate with people! There are some really special people we want you to meet alongside the delicious food they create so watch out for more videos like this one dropping soon!
It was a joy getting to sit down with Bun and Nany Leng to hear about how Satay Noodle House came to be- from Nany fleeing the Cambodian genocide with her family and arriving in New Zealand as refugees to Bun creating a takeaway/restaurant that gives back to the community using the power of social media- this is one special family. Oh and their food? We’ve been dreaming about their wontons for the past 6 weeks.
Huge thanks to Bun, Nany and the Satay Noodle House team for allowing us to film and share their story. You guys are champs.
What we ate and where we ate it:
Braised Pork Belly with rice $17
Cambodian chicken curry with rice $17
Wontons 5 for $7 10 for $13
Chicken satay noodle soup $15
Chicken satay on rice (large) $13.50
Satay Noodle House, 183 Great South Road, Papakura, Auckland 2110, New Zealand.
During Level 3 lockdown Satay Noodle House is open Wednesday to Sunday 3:00pm-8:00pm. In normal times Satay Noodle House is open Wednesday to Sunday 11:30am to 8:30pm.

We’re Thomas and Sheena, food and travel fiends. We travel full time, hunting for the BEST local food in the world to showcase via our YouTube videos. Food is a window into a country’s culture and one of the most exciting ways to get to know a place.
We’re all about eating what and where the locals eat. You won’t find food that’s been created merely to be social media worthy on here- no rainbow bagels, gold leaf soft serves- just genuine, authentic food that tastes incredible.
From street food to mom and pop restaurants, we want to show you the best and most authentic food we find on our travels.

Will definitely go to their restaurant once the lockdown lifts.

What a great back story and a truly wonderful family business. South east Asian migrants/refugees seem to have a great work ethic and could teach we Kiwi's a few things about that. I wish Bun and his family nothing but good luck and next time I am in that part of the country I will be visiting the Satay Noodle House to enjoy their outstanding looking food.
Arderns lockdowns have killed plenty of small businesses like this, places that united their communities
I am drooling 🤤
